About Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes is the oldest and largest National Park in Croatia, proclaimed to be National Park in 1949. and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register in 1979.

It's famous for its 16 lakes that are interconnected but separated by natural dams of travertine and more than ninety astonishing waterfalls with ‘Large Waterfall’ going 78 meters in height. The lakes change their colors going from green to azure, gray and blue and it all depends on the mineral composition of the water and the microorganisms living in it as well as on the angle of the light that hits the surface of the lakes.

As the travertine barriers constantly change their shape by the power of the water Plitvice Lakes never look the same but they always look beautiful. That's only one of the reasons why Split to Plitvice Lakes tour is so popular.

Plitvice Lakes National Park rules

Please be advised to follow Park’s rules and don’t do any of following: don’t collect plant materials or take any ‘souvenirs’ of natural origin, don’t feed the animals, don’t swim in the lakes, don’t litter along the trails or anywhere at the Park except garbage bins that are installed in the park. Also, don’t leave marked trails because your safety is everyone's number one priority.

Long walk through the National Park

Since there is a lot of walking and physical activity, this tour is not recommended for people with mobility issues.

Travertine barriers

Creation of travertine barriers is the reason why Plitvice National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register. Process of their creation dates way back into the geological past in those periods with a warm and wet climate, similar to the climate today.

The age of the active barriers has been estimated at between 6,000 and 7,000 years which mean that they began to grow following the end of the last Ice Age.

Water that runs through Plitvice Lakes dissolves calcium carbonate which settles and sticks to everything in the water. Deposits of that calcium carbonate build dams and that is how lakes, cascades, and waterfalls are created.
